Tofiq Naghiyev was born on 4 March 1941. He graduated from Baku State University, Faculty of Chemistry. In 1967, he defended a PhD thesis on “The study of the reaction of dehydronization of ethylbenzene in relation to sterol”, and obtained a ScD degree after successfully defending a thesis on “Dehydronization of practically important hydrocarbons and their derivatives, and the study of kinetics of reactions of hydrogenolysis and its mechanisms”. In 1976, he became a professor of chemical physics. Academician Naghiyev is director of Encyclopedia of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and is also a professor at the Department of Physics and Colloidal Chemistry. He is an acclaimed scientist in the field of bioimitation catalysis. Tofiq Naghiyev put forward a concept about interference of reactions. Dependent elementary reactions with kinetic parameters occupy an important place in Academician Naghiyev`s fundamental scientific accomplishments. His research interests include new free hydrogen peroxide-induced radical reactions – oxidizing fixation of air nitrogen, dehydrogenation, epoxidation and hydroxylation of alkanes and alkenes, and reaction of hydroxylation of methane to methanol, formaldehyde and hydrogen gas.

He is the founder of a macrokinetic theory of coherent synchronized chemical and biochemical reactions.

He has made a crucial contribution to the working out of the principle of energy accumulation in chemical and biological systems. He now supervises work to develop scientific principles of the establishment of biomimetic sensors, which are new analytical systems. He has published 430 papers, and is the holder of 33 authorship certificates and five patents. He has supervised 20 PhD students to completion. In 2004, he received “Shohrat” Order and “State Award” in 2014.
