VLADIMIR IVANOVICH TIKHOMIROV

Vladimir Tikhomirov was born on 11 April 1881. He graduated from the University of Petersburg.

From 1911 to 1914, he served as a teaching assistant at the Department of Physical Chemistry, Petersburg Polytechnic Institute.

He chaired the Department of Physics, BSU, in 1921, and the Department of Physical Chemistry at Azerbaijan State Oil Academy from 1922 to 1936 and at BSU from 1936 to 1946.

In 1930, he was made a professor. Vladimir Tikhomirov was the recipient of the title “Merited Scientist” and “Red Labor Flag” Order.

His research interests laid in complex physical and chemical processes taking place during the refinement of Baku oil and oil products, and catalytic qualities of volcanic ashes, clay (including bentonite clay) and some minerals.

His paper on chemical balance of the triple system (1971) became popular as “Tikhomirov effect”.

He made a considerable contribution to the preparation of specialists in Azerbaijan, including corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences B.A. Dadashov, professor M. Belenkiy, A. Ismayılzade and M. Malikzade.

He authored several textbooks on physical chemistry, thermodynamics and colloidal chemistry.
