Maharram Maharramov was born on 5 August 1937. In 1960, he graduated from Baku State University, Faculty of Chemistry, and started his postgraduate studies in petrochemistry at the Department of Petrochemistry. In 1963, he defended a PhD thesis, getting a ScD degree in 1985.

He was made a professor in 1986. In 1963, he started his research and teaching activity at the Department of Organic Chemistry, BSU. In 1996, he became chair of the department. Maharram Maharramov is currently deputy chair of the Department of Organic Chemistry. He has published 250 papers in local and foreign periodicals. He is the holder of 25 authorship certificates and patents.

He has supervised over 30 master and 10 PhD students to completion. Maharram Maharramov also co-authored the first modern textbook on organic chemistry in Azerbaijan. He is the recipient of “Merited Teacher” title.
