Mammad Mustafayev was born in 1944. In 1960, he was admitted to Baku State University, Faculty of Chemistry. As a second-year student he was awarded the Lenin Stipend. As a third-year student he continued his education at Lomonosov Moscow State University, Faculty of Chemistry, graduating with honors  in 1966. In 1970, he defended a PhD thesis, and obtained a ScD degree in 1981. From 1970 to 1983, he served as a joint group leader of Moscow Institute of Biophysics and Moscow State University. From 1983 to 1990, he was a group leader, senior research fellow and assistant chief at Immunotechnology Department, Moscow Institute of Immunology. In 1990, he became a professor. From 1992 to 1994, Mammad Mustafayev chaired BSU Department of Organic Chemistry and Artificial Antigens and Vaccines Problem Laboratory. He worked in Turkey from 1993 until his death. He published 220 papers in foreign periodicals and five books abroad. He was the holder of nine international patents, and managed 15 international projects.
