Islam Alizade was born on 10 June 1910. In 1931, he entered  Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University, Faculty of Nature, Department of Chemistry, graduating in 1935. The same year he was appointed head of education department at Qusar city pedagogical vocational school. In 1937, he started his postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Chemistry, Baku State University. A year later he continued his research activity at Kazan State University. In 1941, Islam Alizade defended his PhD thesis, obtaining a ScD degree in 1965.

In 1942, he was elected an associate professor at the Department of Organic Chemistry.

In 1945-1946, he served as chair of the Department of Postgraduate Studies and assistant vice-rector for research at BSU. From 1947 to 1952, he was dean of the Faculty of Chemistry. He was an asscociate professor at the Department of Organic Chemistry, Azerbaijan State Medical University named after N. Narimanov from 1952 to 1954.

From 1954 to 1960, Islam Alizade chaired the Department of Organic Chemistry, Faculty of Chemistry, BSU. In 1969, he became a professor of organic chemistry.

His research interests laid in working out methods of synthesizing of α,α-dihalogenethers, their changes and physiological activity of their synthesized compounds. He synthesized various dichloromethyl ethers of glycols through chlorbrommethylizing ethylene, diethylene and tetraethylene glycols, and also worked out methods of synthesizing tetracarbetoxydialkyl ethers and tetrabasic acids on the basis of dichloromethylethers.

He supervised researches into the production of cyclic sulfones. Islam Alizade published 100 papers, and one brochure. He was the holder of five authorship certificates.

From 1943 to 1946, Islam Alizade chaired BSU Trade Unions Organization, Scientific Council and several specialized thesis defence councils.

He was the recipient of several medals, including “For the Defence of the Caucasus” and “For Valiant Labor during the Great Patriotic War”.
