The Chemistry faculty is one of the outstanding faculties of the Baku State University. The Department consists of 7 chairs, 5 research laboratories, 1 educational museum, 25 training laboratories.

Department’s major research fields are:
- Modern problems of inorganic chemistry
- Thermodynamics and chemical indices of complex semi conductive metallic phases
- Synthesis and analysis of major organic substances
- Synthesis and chemical transformations of polymers, alkylation reactions of aromatic hydrocarbons
- Synthesis of sorbents and catalysts
Department provides full-time tuition. Courses are given in Azerbaijani, Russian and English. 938 students and 85 postgraduates study in the Department. Around 90 professors and lecturers work with the students.
2 of them are Full Members of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, 28 are doctors of sciences, 26 are professors, 53 are candidate of sciences, assistant professors and lecturers.
Chemistry Department was built in 1934. A.E.Ezizov is the Dean of the Chemistry Department since 2006.
There is a lot of prominent scientists and pedagogues who graduated the Chemistry Department in different years.
Yusif Heydar oglu Mammadaliyev – Yusif H. Memmedeliyev:
Y.Mammadaliev was born in 1905. He graduated the Moscow State University in 1931.1934 henceforth he worked as an assistant, assistant professor and professor in the Baku State University. He was chosen as the first academician in the field of chemistry in 1945.
Murtuza Fatulla oglu Naghiyev
M.Naghiyev graduated from the BSU in 1929. He was chosen a professor in the field of chemistry technology in 1945 and the full time member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences in 1952. He was an Honored scientist.
Habibulla Bakhsheli oglu Shakhtakhtinski
H.Shakhtakhtinski graduated from the BSU in 1926. He was made professor in 1950 and was chosen to full membership of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences in 1967. He was an honoured scientist.
Abel Mammadali oglu Maharremov
A.Maharremov was born in 1950. He graduated from the BSU in 1971. 1991 he was conferred upon the title of professor. During 1993-1997 he worked as the Dean of the Chemistry Department. He is an honoured scientist and full-time member of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. Since 1999 he has been the Rector of the Baku State University.
Aliyeva Rafiga Alirza gizi
R.Aliyeva graduated from the BSU in 1956. She defended her candidacy dissertation in 1970 and later doctoral dissertation. She was conferred upon the title of professor in the field of analytical chemistry. In 2000 she was awarded with the title of honoured scientist and the Award of acad. Y.Mammadaliyev. She is an Active Member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. She is the head of the research laboratory of ecological chemistry and environmental protection.
Tofig Murtuza oglu Naghiyev
T.Naghiyev graduated from the BSU in 1964. He was made professor in the field of “Physical chemistry” in 1976. In 1989 he was chosen Correspondent Member of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, since 2001 he has been full member.
Nadir Ibrahim oglu Seyidov
N.Seyidov graduated from the BSU in 1955. He was made professor in the chemistry of high-molecular compounds in 1969. In 1989 he was chosen Correspondent Member of National Academy of Sciences, since 2001 he has been full member.
Garayev Siyavush Ferhad oglu
S.Garayev graduated from the Chemistry Department in the BSU in 1964. He was made professor in 1982. He was chosen full member of National Academy of Sciences. He was the Rector of the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy, at the moment.
Farzaliyev Vagif Majid oglu
V.Farzaliyev graduated from the BSU in 1963. He was made professor in the field of oil chemistry in 1987. He was chosen full-member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences in 2007. He is the director of the institute of the chemistry of alloys.
The professors and the lecturers of the Department have close creative ties with the universities of Turkey, the US, Russia, France, the UK, Germany, Poland, Iran and other developed countries.
The Department Staff participate in international grant projects. Recently, students and postgraduates of the faculty have been representing the Baku State University in different international scientific conferences and competitions quite successfully.
There is high-skilled personnel potential in the faculty who prepare university educated specialists graduated according to modern standards. In order to increase the quality of the researches, NMR, chromatography-mass spectrometry and X-ray labs of modern standards have been set up. There has been considerable work to create other analysis methods in the faculty, too.
Department began to apply Bologna process on in order to extend the standards of the university education to the world standards. For this purpose, new training plans were prepared on the all specialties.
“Credit system” has started to be implemented in the education in 2007-2008 educational years. Research labs, lecture hall have been formed and modern equipment has been purchased for them in order to advance the quality of the education in the Department.
The Department administration is always focusing special attention to strengthening the material – technical base and forming prospective professor-lecturer staff of the faculty with the full-hearted help of the university administration. Main purpose is to prepare high-skilled students and postgraduates up to modern requirements in the fields of chemistry, chemistry teacher, chemical engineering.
