The Faculty of Chemistry was established in 1919 on the basis of the Department of General and Inorganic Chemistry, which has been operating under the Medical Faculty of the Azerbaijan State University. The Faculty of Chemistry has been operating as an independent faculty since 1934. As Azerbaijan is an ancient oil country, the development of modern chemistry began in the mid-nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Invitation of the great chemists of that time DI Mendeleev, VV Markovnikov, VOKovalevsky, FFBeilstein, AAKurbatov, VNOgloblin and other prominent chemists to Baku for the more efficient use of oil by the Nobel brothers, VI Rogozin and other magnates In general, it gave a great impetus to the development of chemical science in Azerbaijan, the establishment of local specialists with higher education, chemistry departments in universities. Later, in the early 1960s, the call of the then head of state of the USSR NS Khrushchev "chemicalization of the country" gave another impetus to the development of this science. As a result of this campaign, which lasted until the end of the 1960s, most of the young people who graduated from high school in Azerbaijan (as well as our compatriots in Georgia and Armenia) with high marks and medals chose the Faculty of Chemistry for higher education. .

There are many of our chemists who graduated from the Faculty of Chemistry in different years and conquered the highest peaks of science. They have contributed to the training of chemists and the development of chemical science in our country. These intellectuals, who have always honored the chemistry faculty of their university, have worthily represented Azerbaijan in many scientific centers around the world. Today, among those graduates are MPs, university rectors and government officials. During the 95-year history of BSU, two chemists at different times, in 1954-1958, acad. YH Mammadaliyev (1905-1961) and from January 11, 1999 to the present, acad. AM Maharramov was appointed rector of BSU.

Since its establishment, the faculty has been headed by Assoc. Mamedamin Haji Ahmad oglu Efendi (1934-1937); dos. Murtuza Gasim oglu Ahmadli (1937-1938); dos. Madat Ali oglu Iskandarov (1938-1939); dos. Sattar Abilov (1939-1946); prof. Islam Gafar oglu Alizade (1946-1950); prof. Jumshud Ismayil oglu Zulfugarli (1950-1952); prof. Bashir Mikayil oglu Mirzayev (1967-1975); dos. Fikret Rzagulu oglu Babayev (1975-1978); dos. Demir Heydar oglu Gambarov (1978-1981); dos. Anvar Agamirza oglu Bashirov (1983-1988); prof. Valeh Mehrali oglu Ismayilov (1988-1993); prof. Abel Mammadali oglu Maharramov (1993-1999); prof. Eldar Isa oglu Ahmadov (1999-2006) headed it. Since 2006, prof. It is headed by Abdulsayid Abdulhamid oglu Azizov.

Faculty, teaching and support staff, structure of the faculty.

There are 7 departments, 5 research laboratories, 35 teaching laboratories at the faculty.

The department of general and inorganic chemistry was established in 1919 as the first department of the faculty under the medical faculty. In 1935, three more departments were established - Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry and Physical and Colloid Chemistry. In 1943, on the initiative of YH Mammadaliyev, the Department of Petrochemistry (now Petrochemistry and Chemical Technology) was established. The Department of Chemistry of High Molecular Compounds has been operating since 1964, the Department of Chemistry Teaching Methods since 1987.

Vice deans: Fuad Karimli, Taleh Gahramanov, Elvin Malikov, tutors of the Faculty of Chemistry: Ellada Karimova, Lala Hasanova, Aynur Isgandarova, Roya Safiyeva, Aysel Haciyeva, Khanim Mamishova and executor Leyla Huseynli Maharram  are closely involved in the organization and implementation of high-level education at the faculty.

At the time of its establishment, there were only three employees of the Faculty of Chemistry. At present, about 100 professors and teachers are engaged in the education of students and masters studying at the faculty. 3 of them are full members of ANAS, 3 are corresponding members, 25 are doctors of sciences, professors, 50 are candidates of sciences, associate professors, senior teachers and teachers. 24 out of 56 employees of the research laboratories of the faculty are candidates of sciences. The faculty has 52 laboratory assistants and 14 technical staff.

Organization of education and training of highly qualified personnel. The form of education at the faculty is obvious. Education is conducted in Azerbaijani, Russian and English languages. Starting from the 2014-2015 academic year, the Ministry of Education has established "Tomorrow groups" on "Chemistry", "Chemistry teaching" specialties for the purpose of training highly qualified personnel. From this year, students are admitted to the English department of the faculty majoring in "chemistry".

The faculty conducts bachelor's and master's degree programs in "Chemistry", "Chemical Engineering", "Chemistry Teaching" and 15 specializations.

Universal training is carried out in the specialty of chemistry, students graduating from this specialty can work in chemical, petrochemical industry enterprises, chemical research institutes.

Students graduating with a degree in Chemistry Teaching become Chemistry Teachers. They can teach chemistry at a high level as chemistry teachers in secondary schools and lyceums of our republic.

Chemical engineers are trained in oil and gas, paints, chemicals, plastics, food, pharmaceuticals and other processing industries.

At present, about 1000 bachelors, about 100 masters study at the faculty, 27 doctoral students and 22 dissertators, 11 people are working on dissertations on doctoral programs. 5 foreign citizens continue their education in the specialty of Doctor of Philosophy.

The work of the Faculty Student Scientific Society has been strengthened. Students interested in scientific work were assigned to the departments according to their wishes. From time to time their reports are heard in seminars and scientific conferences. Classes are organized in preparation for inter-university subject Olympiads.

A local computer network has been established at the faculty. Every information entered in the departments is collected on a central computer. A database of teachers and students has been created and any reports can be obtained based on it. The creation of this base allows the dean's office to build its work at the level of today's requirements. Students, faculty, teachers and classes discuss in the forum created on the official website of the faculty.

Scientific and international relations of the faculty. Since its establishment, the Faculty of Chemistry has established scientific relations with the world's leading scientific centers, including Moscow State University named after MVLomonosov, Institute of Organic Chemistry named after NDZelinski, Kazan State University, Russian Institute of Physiologically Active Compounds, Institute of Organic and Physical Chemistry named after ATArbuzov (Kazan). , Favorsky Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Eastern Siberian Academy of Sciences (Irkutsk), University of Minnesota, USA, etc. continues successfully with. In addition, scientists of the faculty from the United States, Romania, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, Germany, France, Sweden, Portugal, Iran and others. The countries have close scientific ties with scientists working in leading science centers. As a result of scientific and technical cooperation with the German company "Brooker", the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Laboratory was established at the faculty in 2002.
